Satellite products for Air Quality applications course

Bangalore, India. 16th-21st Feb 2025

INTRODUCTORY COURSE | Feb 16th-19th

Introduction to Satellite Products for Air Quality Applications

The purpose of this training is to familiarize attendees with how to obtain and use satellite based particulate measurements and products, associated ground-based data and reanalysis data sets.  The training will emphasize data the is most relevant to India.  The training will be a mix of lectures and hands-on activities.  During the course, attendees will work in small groups to compile the information necessary to case study of an event of interest in the target area.  Each group will present their case study at the end of the training.  Case studies are an essential component of the training as they allow attendees to immediately review, use and apply the information that is presented at the training.

Satellite data products will be organized and presented as ecosystems.   Each ecosystem consists of satellite products, visualization tools, and data archives.  In this training we will concentrate on the NASA – NOAA ecosystem.

We recommend this course to anyone who wants to improve their ability to use satellite remote sensing data:
  • Air quality researchers

  • Professionals and regulators at the national, state or municipal levels

  • Compliance officers from emitting industries

  • Remote sensing and atmospheric science graduate students

# University personnel, Government and Private Industry:
  • Introductory course Only – INR 17000
  • Introductory course + GRASP Course – INR 25000
# Students:
  • Introductory course Only – INR 3450
  • Introductory course + GRASP Course – INR 5150

+ Food and beverage charge for all attendees: INR 2500

ADVANCED COURSE | Feb 20th-21st

Advanced application of remote sensing data using GRASP

GRASP (Generalized Retrieval of Atmosphere and Surface Properties) is a pioneering unified algorithm designed to analyze atmospheric properties using a wide range of remote sensing observations. This workshop is structured to provide participants with an intermediate level understanding of the GRASP framework and its versatile applications, particularly in conjunction with NASA/ISRO satellite missions. The program includes lectures on key topics such as radiative transfer, surface modeling, and the aerosol single-scattering database, which is essential for simulating aerosol observations.

Building on the foundational knowledge of aerosol products covered during the first 3.5 days of the workshop, participants will transition to the algorithmic aspect, learning how these aerosol products are retrieved through inverse methods. Hands-on activities will provide practical experience in applying GRASP to AERONET observations and NASA PACE-HARP2 data. The workshop emphasizes experiential learning, enabling attendees to perform aerosol retrievals using data from ground-based, sub-orbital, and space-based platforms.

Additionally, the program will explore how GRASP can integrate synergistic observations from ISRO and NASA satellites to enhance retrieval accuracy. By the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be equipped to confidently use the GRASP software with their preferred satellite instruments for satellite retrievals. They will also gain the skills to utilize the forward model within the GRASP package to simulate satellite observations at the top of the atmosphere for a variety of aerosol remote sensing instruments.

With the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launching its own satellites and making significant investments in the burgeoning space industry, GRASP is highly recommended for professionals who aspire to be at the forefront of developing India’s emerging space data capabilities. Individuals who possess an intermediate level of skill in remote sensing data or who have completed the introductory course are eligible to attend.
