EUMETSAT has initiated the development of a new auxiliary product to support Copernicus Sentinel-3 atmospheric processing: the S3 LSR (Land Surface Reflectivity) dataset.

Land surface reflectance is a key input for accurately retrieving atmospheric parameters, especially aerosols, from satellite measurements in the visible and near-infrared spectral ranges. So far, a reliable a priori surface reflectance dataset has been missing from the operational Sentinel-3 processing chain.

The S3 LSR product is being developed using time-series data from Sentinel-3 instruments (OLCI and SLSTR). It is designed to improve the separation of surface and atmospheric signals in optical data, enhancing the accuracy of derived atmospheric products. The dataset will be integrated into near real-time processing chains, including the OLCI Aerosol Layer Height product.

Development is being led by GRASP , with contributions from Brockmann Consult GmbH and Spectral Earth, under EUMETSAT coordination.
